Averting the wedding band disaster – pt.2

What you would expect to pay

All forms of entertainment vary in price, sometimes dramatically.

Elements that can influence this are: Travel distance, accommodation requirements, extra peripheral requirements (depending on the size of the venue) and the size and quality of the band.

Book several months in advance

A band that has a regular gig and is in demand will likely be booked months in advance. These
groups are usually highly organized and are booked well ahead by the top venues.

New bands that have no local presence or following are unlikely to command the market rate. Often they could be very generic and inconsistent that could lead to an unnecessary gamble.

It is important to consider what date your wedding falls on. If it lands on a public holiday or date of significance, you are more likely to pay a premium for their service.

Location of your reception

A local wedding requires very little travel and no accommodation. The fee that is charged should be close to ‘market rate’ providing there are no additional requirements.

Additions usually include things like: extra sound equipment (for larger venues) and peripherals.

On the other hand, a wedding in say, the Marlborough sounds, requires many other aspects to think about such as: ferry travel for the van and all band members, a 2-3 hour drive each way, rooms and meals.

For an out of town gig, you are looking at 12 hours travel time for each member, petrol, ferry, accommodation, food, beverage and administrative expenses.

Agents

Sourcing a band through an agent can save you time but you do have to pay a booking fee for their service. It is usually 20% extra on the bands fee.

Using an agent does have benefits such as written contracts and standards to adhere by that often wouldn’t be formalized by a band.

Confirmation

Once you have made your decision and have a date confirmed, you will be required to pay a deposit (usually 20-25% of fee). This pens in the date and ensures the band will be playing at your reception.

You should expect to pay anywhere between $1800 and $3000 excluding gst for a professional, well-established band in their home town.
